The course begins by emphasizing that politics is important. Businesses understand that both domestic and international political dynamics shape economic performance in both developed and developing countries.

The first part of the course identifies different types of political risks – geopolitics, domestic instability, terrorism, corruption, expropriation, breaches of contract, social activism and cyber-threats among others – and discusses the available sources for measuring and evaluating these risks. The second part of the course introduces the basic concepts of managing political risk – managing, understanding, analysing, mitigating and responding – and practices these skills through case-study exercises. Finally, the course concludes with students simulating client meetings highlighting political risks and opportunities for investors in concrete countries and regions
